Dental implants: a permanent replacement for a missing tooth

An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium post. Once it bonds with the jawbone, a custom crown is attached. It looks, feels and chews like a natural tooth.

Is it right for you?

  • You're missing one tooth or several teeth in a row
  • You don't want to grind down healthy teeth for a bridge
  • Your partial or denture moves when you eat
  • Your gums are healthy, or can be treated first

What to expect

  1. ConsultationAn exam and x-rays to check your bone and gums, then a written plan with costs.
  2. Implant placementThe area is numbed and a small titanium post is placed where the tooth was.
  3. HealingOver the next few months the implant bonds with the bone. You can wear a temporary tooth in the meantime.
  4. Your new toothA custom crown is made to match your other teeth and attached to the implant.

Our dentists are general dentists who provide this treatment in our office. Treatment recommendations follow an exam.

Common questions

Does getting an implant hurt?

The area is fully numbed for placement. Most patients describe soreness for a few days afterward that is managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

How long does the whole process take?

Most single implants take a few months from placement to final crown, because the bone needs time to bond with the implant. Your plan will give you a timeline.

How do I care for an implant?

Brush and floss it like a natural tooth and keep your regular cleanings. Implants can't get cavities, but the gums around them still need care.

Am I a candidate?

Most adults with healthy gums and enough jawbone are. Smoking and some health conditions slow healing. We'll go over your situation at the consultation.
